Rochester and Tippecanoe Valley say NO to NSC

The remaining 4 teams in the Northern State Conference received disappointing news Tuesday as Tippecanoe Valley and Rochester have decided to stay in the Three Rivers Conference.  Both schools received invitations to join the league after LaVille, Triton, Knox and Culver decided to leave for a new conference.

Rochester's Ryan Helt told NSC officials, "After careful consideration, Rochester High School has decided to decline the invitation to join the Northern State Conference.  In our corporation's review process, a number of factors were examined including travel distance, conference composition, enrollment, and competitiveness.  We sought input from our administration, our board, and our coaches."

He went on to say, Declining membership was a difficult decision to reach, but ultimately, we came to the conclusion that it was in our corporation's best interest to remain affiliated with the Three Rivers Conference.  We are honored that the member schools of the Northern State Conference extended an invitation, and we hold all of the schools in the highest regard."

Tippecanoe Valley also declined the inviation making it official earlier Tuesday.  Athletic Director Duane Burkhart noted the instability of the NSC, increased travel times and established TRC rivals as reasons the Vikings will stay in their current situation.

NLC member Wawasee declined a formal invitation September 16th while NECC member Fairfield said no before it could even be formally invited.

Still in discussions with the Northern State Conference is Mishawaka Marian, but FOX 28 has been told that the Knights would like at least 6 members in the league before they would consider leaving the NIC. Marian is the smallest team in the Northern Indiana Conference.  Athletic Director Reggie Glon said in a statement September 12th, "Invitation letters have been sent out to four schools on Tuesday that would make it an 8 team conference, they would like an answer by mid October.   We have notified the NIC that we have been invited that we are investigating our options and we will keep them in the loop with our decision. We have started that process here at Marian all the head coaches are required to give input on the new conference, the school board has formed a committee and I have to do a presentation in two weeks to them with our findings. We are also have been talking with the teams in the NIC that we have built good rivalries with so we can continue to play them as non conference opponents."

If there is a new Northern State Conference, it is scheduled to begin play in the 2014-15 school year with Bremen, Jimtown, John Glenn and New Prairie.
