South Bend barber salon reaches out to community

Posted:

There's many barber shops out there, you can find them on almost every block, but one salon in South Bend is doing more than cut hair.

Kintae Lark is the owner of Inspiration Barber Salon and says he wants people to leave with more than a new do. "Our goal is to offer them a good experience, our goal is to offer them safety."

Lark's shop has partnered up with Life Safe station - an organization that helps at risk teens. Through his barber shop, he mentors, offers the teens free hair services  and even career seminars. He says a barber shop is the perfect venue for all this and more. "While in the barbershop there's laughing, there's joking, there's serious talk, there's tears at times and it's a place where people can really unwind and really be their selves."

His shop is located in an area that's been hit with a lot of crime lately, but as a South Bend native he says he's not going anywhere. "We choose to be right here, right in the heart of the city, because the city needs it. We realize there's risky behavior that takes place in some of our neighborhoods, but our goal is to help alleviate it, we can't alleviate it if we disappear."

Lark says he has worked in ministry, but he finds he's able to reach more people when they're sitting in this chair. "Many are not running to the counselors office, many are not running to the schools, several of them are running to the barbershop however."

Inspiration Barber Salon has new programs coming up. They're working on providing free blood pressure screenings and they're starting a literacy program for kids who are waiting for their parents to get hair cuts. They are also looking for more organizations to team up with them. For more information click here or call 574-386-9819.
