Penn spellers dominate at Winamac Invitational

Penn High School's Spell Bowl squad racked up its second invitational title of the season on Monday night, Oct. 23, when they dominated an eight team field at the Winamac Invitational.

The Kingsmen of coach Pete DeKever tallied 88 out of a possible 90 words to easily outdistance the second place host Winamac Warriors who scored 46, followed by Kouts with 44 and Washington Twp. with 43.

Last week Penn won the East Noble Invitational to open the 2013 season.

Here are the final standings at Winamac:

  4. WASHINGTON TWP.  43
  5. MORGAN TWP.          39
  6. LACROSSE                26
    LOGANSPORT           26  (Tie)
  7. OREGON-DAVIS          3

Perfect varsity spellers for Penn were:  Richard Jung, Nitin Arora, Kanika Arora, Peter Jung, Max Kirsch, Faihaan Arif, Chris Yun and Disha Waghray.

Perfect junior varsity spellers for the Kingsmen were:  Presto George, Maqsit Bucch, Michelle Tapp, Alice Kwak, Josh RajKumar, Yejee Oh and Nikita Kumar.

Next up for the defending state champions is the Penn Invitational on Thursday, Sept. 26, in the school cafeteria beginning at 6pm.  The public is invited and there is no admission charge.
