A look into the tradition of the Irish Guard

Posted:

Before kick-off Saturday, Notre Dame fans said the game against Oklahoma would be a true test for the team.  But the Football players aren't the only ones with a big responsibility on game day.

Before every home football game the band plays a concert on campus for a crowd of thousands.  And then they march to the stadium.  But they aren't marching alone.  10 people stand guard of the band, they're the Irish Guard.  "Maintain our presence and alert people the band is coming," said Irish Guard Captain Christopher Cali.

The Irish Guard has traditions of their own.  Their uniform itself is a tradition.  Cali said, "It takes about 35 minutes to get that whole uniform together."  And it must be in tip top shape.  Before every game Irish Guard Captain Christopher Cali inspects the other guardsmen's uniforms.

That stance is another tradition of the guardsmen.  "As an Irish guard we maintain a stoic look when we're at attention, when we're at attention or marching," said Cali.

While they may not have smiles on their faces that doesn't mean they aren't having the time of their lives.  "It's an incredible experience, again we have a stoic look on but the hearts beating fast.  The fans are going crazy, the band's playing the fight song, everyone here loves Notre Dame and it's just uh a wonderful, wonderful experience," said Cali.

They guard the band and welcome the team onto the field and they've been doing it since 1949.  "It's a service, we don't get any type of scholarship, we don't get any credit, it's just 10 guys doing something that's an awesome tradition." said Cali.

There are some requirements to be in the Irish Guard, you have to be at least 6'2" and have completed one academic year at the University.  You don't have to be a man though Cali said in the past two women have been part of the Guard.
