SBFD dedicates new fire station

Monday was a special day for firefighters in South Bend.

The new Fire Station 5 on Prairie Avenue was re-opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Community members and Mayor Pete Buttigieg joined the firefighters for the dedication of the new building-- which replaced the original station built in 1954.

Some improvements that were made include a workout room and state of the art filtering systems for the health and wellness of the firefighters.

"One of the issues we had all along was that that particular fire station through the last 50-60 years has become outdated," said South Bend fire chief Stephen Cox, "because of the size of the station, technological advances have taken place over the timeframe and we were unable to keep up with that. "

The total cost to build the new station was about 1-point-1 million dollars.
