Concord West Side Elementary teacher gets big box of school supplies

Posted:

It was a little like Christmas this morning in a classroom at Concord West Side Elementary School.

A big box of school supplies, filled with everything from binders to a tablet, was rolled in to Cynthia Jay's first grade classroom. The box came from Office Max as part of "A Day Made Better" program.

The company says teachers spend an average of $1,000 a year of their own money on school supplies; a number the company says is surprising and unacceptable.

Two items in the box really caught Jay's eye – a Kindle and a camera. Last year, she says she borrowed her son's Kindle and used it in the classroom. She won't have to borrow it anymore. The camera will also get some use. "The camera is amazing, because I'm constantly taking pictures of things that we want to remember and pictures that I want to send home," said Jay.

West Side Principal Gerard Donlon nominated Jay for the supplies. "Ms. Jay gets ALL students engaged, her funny and enthusiastic persona, the integration of technology, and the passion that she holds for her profession," Donlon said in his nomination.

While Jay was honored today, Donlon recognized the hard work of all the teachers at his school. "It's not just a 9 to 3 o'clock job, they're here at night and on the weekends and I'm often having to push them out the door, so this just a little satisfaction, reward for them for all the hard work that they put in," said Donlon.

Jay is in her first year teaching first grade. She previously taught kindergarten.
