"Share the Road" program aims to reduce road accidents

Posted:

If you've driven in Michiana, chances are you've had to share the road with a horse or buggy a time or two.

Parkview LaGrange Hospital President Rob Myers says this can be a problem when car and buggy drivers aren't aware of each other. Roads where both cars and buggies drive have increased collision risks.

This year the number of collisions has increased.

"We have a significant amount of truck traffic, especially since they increased rates on the toll road." says Myers.

Which is why a team at the hospital have launched a program called "Share the Road" to increase awareness of non-automotive traffic.

"Share the Road" will continue education efforts aimed at locals and also distribute information to popular tourist sites in the area.

"We get a lot of people from Chicago area, South Bend area, those areas in the city that don't have to deal with horse and buggies and bicyclists and people walking along the side of the road like we do here in LaGrange County."

LaGrange County Sheriff Terry Martin says all people have to do is be more alert and be a little more careful when passing buggies.
