Over a dozen new businesses open in Downtown South Bend

Posted:

13 new businesses are opening in Downtown South Bend according to DTSB.  11 of the new businesses have already opened in the downtown district and two more are set to open soon.  They will all have opened in the span of about one month, according to Aaron Perri with DTSB.

A press release from DTSB says the new businesses, "account for more than 100 new jobs and nearly $2 million of private investment into renovating existing spaces.  Serving to increase downtown vitality, the new businesses include a mix of restaurants, shops, and attractions."

Perri said the growth in Downtown businesses is fueled by numerous things including building enhancement grants, the holiday pop-up shop programs, and riverfront liquor licenses.

Jeremy Young, Managing Partner at the new Woochi Asian Fusion and Sushi said they decided to open up in South Bend for two reasons, the first being the fact that they could apply one of the riverfront liquor licenses there and the second reason he said, "This one is close to campus so we can attract a lot of the football fans here."

Store Manager at the new Indiana Rug Company, Lindsay Vest said the opened up shop in Downtown South Bend because they had participated in the pop up shop program last year and then they participated in Art Beat this year, saw the open space and, "the starts just aligned."

No one is worried about so many new places opening at the same time and stealing business from each other because they're all different.  Vest said, "The good thing is not everybody does what we do."  And Young said, "We are only one sushi restaurant here so we could be different."  Vest said all the unique businesses are exactly what downtown needs, "Everybody's kinda offering their own little part to the puzzle and there's not one solution to making downtown grow it's gotta be a bunch of people coming together. "
