Irish pull off the upset against Arizona State

Wearing special chrome helmets for their Shamrock Series game against Arizona State the Notre Dame Fighting Irish shined in a 37-34 win.

"A terrific football game," said Notre Dame Head Coach Brian Kelly. "You know we have been looking for some consistency offensively and we knew coming into this game we had to control the football and keep the offense on the field."

With the win against the Sun Devils, Notre Dame improves to 4-2 on the season. Senior quarterback Tommy Rees finished the game with 279 yards passing and 3 touchdowns.

"I think as an offense we settled in and had a good understanding of what [Arizona State was] trying to do," said Rees. "Arizona State had a great game plan, they did a lot of things of defense to get us thinking. So we made some plays there in the second quarter and I'm proud of how the offense played."

With a 24-13 lead early in the forth quarter it seemed like the Irish could set their cruise control. However, Rees threw an interception to Osahon Irabor who took it 37-yards and into the end-zone for the Sun Devils to make it a four point game.

The Irish finally were able to seal the win later in the final quarter when they got an interception for a touchdown of their own. Dan Fox picked off Arizona State's Taylor Kelly near the goal-line to give the Irish a 10 point lead; it was Kelly's second interception of the day. ASU scored another touchdown with 11 seconds to go, but failed to convert an onside kick.

Despite the high score the Irish defense got some solid contributions from key players. Prince Shembo, who had not recorded a sack all season, brought Kelly down three times in the backfield. Notre Dame captain Bennett Jackson forced a fumble that lead to an Irish touchdown pass from Rees to Troy Niklas.

Taylor Kelly's first interception of the day was thrown to Notre Dame's Matthias Farley. The Irish were unable to convert that turnover into any points.

TJ Jones had one of his best games of the year and possibly of his career with the Irish. The senior wide receiver had 8 catches for 135 yards and one touchdown.

The Irish have next weekend off. Their next game will be against the USC Trojans on Oct. 19.
