Clay building confidence heading into end of season

"A win is a win" is one of the oldest cliches in all of sports, but for the Clay Football team it definitely applies.

Last Friday night, the Colonials hopped out to a 7-0 lead on Washington, but then came the lightning. The game was postponed until 4:00PM Saturday.

They thought the delay would help them avoid any bad weather, but then came the pouring down rain. Clay played it out through the down pour and held onto that 7-0 lead to pick up their first win of the year.

"Oh, it felt great," said Donzell Brown, Clay Senior Defensive Back. "I think it's going to be a turning point for us."

Clay's next game will be this coming Friday against city rival St. Joseph. They're hoping Saturday's win will give them more confidence this week.

"You get a little bit of momentum, you get a certain edge, you go into this next week and you practice harder you plan harder," said Christopher Bauter, Clay Junior Offensive Tackle. "Everything starts coming together a little bit more and you got in there and you believe in yourself a lot more."

Stopping the Indians high powered offense will be difficult, but even one win has the Colonials defense feeling good about themselves going into this weekend.

"We're more confident now," said A. J. Murphy, Clay Senior Linebacker. "Now that we know what we can do and our defense actually got a shutout."

The Colonials don't know how this week will go, but their hoping their win against Washington, isn't the last of the season.

"We Talked about that. The time to get good is at the end of the year," said Joe Szajko, Clay Head Coach. "That's really when it counts. Time and time again there's teams that will win six, seven, or eight games in the regular season and they're one and done in the playoffs. We really want to try and win in the playoffs. That's been our goal all year is to get better, so we can win when it counts."
