LaPorte Police say they arrested an intoxicated parent at a Pop Warner football practice Thursday.

39-year-old Lance Dieken was taken into custody at Kesling Middle School.

Police say officers were called to the school around 6:15 p.m. to investigate reports of an intoxicated man at the practice with children in a vehicle.

When officers arrived, police say they found a running pick-up truck with a 7-year-old child inside.

Officers say they were directed to a man who was observed yelling on the field and having a hard time maintaining his balance. Police say the man, identified as Dieken, smelled of alcohol and appeared intoxicated.

Police say Dieken told police the truck was his and he'd come to pick up his other son, who is 6, from practice. Police say officers asked Dieken how he was planning to get the children home. Officers say Dieken told them he was going to drive them.

Dieken was taken into custody on charges of Child Neglect, a D felony, and Public Intoxication, a B misdemeanor.

Police say the mother of the children was called to come get the children.

A copy of the police report was forwarded to Child Protective Services.
