Beach weather in October is good for business

Posted:

Temps in the mid-70s and plenty of sunshine make for a great day at the beach, even in mid-October.  And businesses are welcoming the late-season crowds to the shores of Lake Michigan.

Norma and Ron Miller spent the day on the beach in St. Joseph Michigan.  Never mind that the Calendar says October, it feels like June.   Norma said it was, "warm and just perfect day, perfect day to get out and have some fun."  And Ron agreed saying, "It's been such a nice warm fall.  It's like we can do the yard work tomorrow so figured just come up here and enjoy today."

Several other people share the Miller's thinking.  Folks flocked to the beach and strolled the streets of Downtown Saturday.  Teresa Baker and Golden Brown Bakery Cafe said, "It's been really busy."

She said this October is very different from last year.  "Last year about this time it was just our local crowd that would come in ya know our regulars and stuff but we're still seeing a lot of people from Chicago."

Baker said the extended summer weather is putting more money in the cash register.  "This is just an added bonus."

A few doors down at Kilwin's business is also booming.  Co-Owner Janet Dykstra said, "It has been excellent.  It's making up for the spring and early summer weather that we didn't have so it's been very good."

She said this isn't the first time they've had a busy October but the fall crowds are always weather dependent.  "Some years it's really nice and some years it hasn't been so great...It helps when the weather's really nice."

And beach goers like the Millers say this weather is some of the nicest they've seen in October.   "I think this is the best fall we've had in a long time," said Norma.
