UPDATE: SWAT activity ends in South Bend neighborhood

The SWAT team was called to the 6600 block of Leeway Drive in South Bend Sunday afternoon.

Police say it started as a domestic disturbance call around 2:15pm. A woman got out of the home and told police the man inside had a weapon.

About an hour later, SWAT negotiators talked the man, who officers say was in his 70s, out of the home.

"We wanted to make sure everything was safe, not only inside, but outside. The South Bend Police Department SWAT team as well as hostage negotiators were dispatched to this location to be able to talk the individual out from the house," says Gary Horvath, South Bend Police Department Division Chief.

Police say he had self-inflicted injuries and was taken to the hospital. No word on whether any charges will be filed.

Police found a gun inside the home of an upscale South Bend neighborhood near Blackthorn Golf Club. Horvath says they very seldom have any problems in the neighborhood.
