Mishawaka leaf pick-up begins

The leaves are changing color and starting to fall. For local cities, it means the start of leaf pick-up programs.

Mishawaka's leaf pick-up program started Monday. Residents should rack their leaves to the edge of the curb for pick-up.

Leaves will be picked up each week the day before your regular trash pick-up day. So, if your trash pick-up is on Wednesday, your leaf pick-up would be Tuesday. Those with a Monday trash day will have their leaves picked up on Friday.

The city asks the leaves be free of branches, twigs and stones – anything that could damage their equipment and delay pick-up. They also ask you not rake leaves into the street right after the leaf vacuum goes through. Those leaves could clog storm sewers.

Leaves can also be bagged and put out with your trash. Brush can be taken to the Mishawaka Recycling Center, 1105 East Fifth Street, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.

The pick-up program will continue through November or until leaves are no longer a problem.
