Speeches and protests expected at Benton Harbor State of the City

Benton Harbor still has a way to go on its way to financial recovery. On Tuesday Mayor James Hightower and other city officials will give their opinions on the progress.

The State of the City Address starts at 6 pm inside Benton Harbor High School's Performing Arts Center located at 870 Colfax Avenue. A number of department heads will be there to give information on what Mayor Hightower is calling "exciting initiatives."

Not everyone is excited about the speech though. Commissioner Trenton Bowens tells FOX28 he'll be protesting the State of the City address. He says city officials never show up to Benton Harbor Commission meetings.

Tensions have been high in the city over the last month as well. On September 26, protesters marched outside City Hall to speak out against Benton Harbor outsourcing a number of city departments. They called for Emergency Manager Tony Saunders' resignation.

FOX28 will bring you the latest information on Benton Harbor's financial situation and the number of opinions surrounding the issue both on air and online at FOX28.com.
