Memorial cross country runner felt Sarah Strong as she won sectional title

It was like something out of a Disney movie when Elkhart Memorial cross country runner Brooke Moore crossed the finish line Tuesday night.

Earlier this year, Moore's former teammate Sarah Crane, a 15-year-old, was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer before the season started. Its a disease only about 10 percent of people survive.

Crane is a sophomore at Memorial and has been undergoing chemotherapy treatments for the last few months in Indianapolis.

"We've dedicated our season to Sarah because she was going to come out for cross country and having her get diagnosed with cancer just really effected our team," said Moore, who is a junior at Memorial. "She's always in our thoughts and prayers."

Racing against some of the best talent in the area at the Elkhart Sectional Title Race, Moore was the first to cross the finish line. As if winning the individual sectional title was not impressive enough, Moore was 30 seconds ahead of her closest competition.

Shortly after she finished the race, Moore admitted her mind was on Sarah as she ran through the course at Oxbow Park.

"Going out from nothing to getting first for her, it just feels really good," said Moore.

Moore knows winning the sectional crown will not cure Sarah's cancer, but she's hoping it will encourage her to keep fighting.

"It makes me feel like we've accomplished something," said Moore.

While she dedicated the win to Sarah, Moore says it's also an important win for herself in a quest to making the state championships in Terre Haute.

Moore and her Charger teammates are hoping to continue their cross country season this Saturday after advancing to regionals. Memorial will need to place in the top five teams at the regional meet in order to move on to the semi-state finals.
