UPDATE: South Bend PD find SUV taken in home invasion

Posted:

South Bend Police are searching for three suspects after a home invasion at Park Jefferson Apartments on South Bend's east side.  Police got the call around 4:00am on Wednesday.

Police tell FOX28 that three armed men broke into an apartment and tried robbing a family. Two adults, an 18-year-old two nine-year-olds and a two-year-old were inside when it happened. Police were originally told they were tied up but they're not sure if that was the case.

The suspects then took a woman and the baby to another home in the 1600 block of Nash Street and tried robbing that home.  Police say the suspects were unsuccessful at robbing both homes.

Later Wednesday morning, South Bend police announced that they have recovered the purple Chevy Equinox that the robbers had taken.  Police say it was found running at a home on the southwest side of the city.  The department's crime lab is currently processing the vehicle for evidence.

The three suspects are still on the loose.  Police have only released a very general description of the three suspects. They are said to be black men who were wearing masks and baggies clothing.

Police believe this was a targeted crime - not random. "These guys were after something specific. It's easy to see that there was a relationship, a correlation that these guys chose this target very specifically," said South Bend Captain Phil Trent.

Everyone in the family is safe and accounted for.  "The officers were more interested in making sure everybody's liberated. We were very concerned that we had a hostage situation," said Trent. "That turned out not to be the case thankfully. The bright side is nobody was harmed."
