New idea to save iconic Michiana ice cream brand

Posted:

A Michiana story that's been getting national attention.   A plant shut-down, the owners blame it partially on ObamaCare.  Bonnie Doon Ice Cream is closing it's Elkhart Plant and it's Downtown Mishawaka Restaurant.  But now there's a new grass-roots plan to save the iconic brand.

"It has such a really powerful name in our community I think there's people that really would go out of their way to see this not only survive something like this but to come back even better than it has been in the past," said Community Organizer Jedediah Walls.

He threw out an idea on the Facebook page for the group "Three Degrees of Separation."  He wants to raise money to buy the brand using a fundraising website like kickstarter and make it a co-op style business.  The idea has received a lot of response on Facebook.   "The response has kinda just blown me away," said Walls, "in terms of people who want to donate, in terms of people who are expert marketing and business people that want to offer their advice and be involved "

Walls said nowadays there's a lot of successful community driven business concepts, "we've really seen this kind of renaissance in the area and I thought why can't Bonnie Doon be a part of that as well?"

Those who love the brand think it's a great idea. "It would be good for all of us to step up and support that," said Michiana resident Andrea Natali.  She was saddened when she heard the news about Bonnie Doon and she supports anything to keep the plant open. "It's been a landmark.  Bonnie Doon is a tradition, it's what everybody has grown up with through the years."

Walls said this is all just an idea right now.  The first thing to do would be to sit down with Bonnie Doon.  "The ultimate goal I think would be to build a co-op that allows Bonnie Doon's to stay open and create this situation where the company is giving back to the community in a really significant way and the community feels like they're actually owners of this," said Walls.

If you're interested in helping with this new idea to save Bonnie Doon visit the "Three Degrees of Separation" Facebook Page.

And we should point out it's just the Elkhart Plant and Downtown Mishawaka location closing,  the LincolnWay Restaurant will remain open.
