Mishawaka elementary students practice earthquake safety

Elementary school students spent some of Thursday learning how to be safe during an earthquake.  Rebecca Sheperd with the St. Joseph County Emergency Management Agency says kids in our area are used to the idea of tornados striking, but most don't know enough about earthquake dangers.

Sheperd says there is a fault line in southern Indiana that can cause tremors that impact our area as well. That's why Walt Disney Elementary in Mishawaka teamed up with them for an earthquake drill.

Thursday's drill is part of a regional education effort called the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut.  Schools, businesses, organizations, and individuals registered on the groups website to practice earthquake safety.

Principal Randy Williams says the drill was organized and effective, and although he still needs to review specifics with the team, he thinks the kids did a great job.
