Elkhart meeting aimed at fighting local crime falls through

Posted:

An Elkhart neighborhood is trying to fight violence on their streets.  Sunday evening folks in the Middlebury-Tipton community came out for what was supposed to be a second neighborhood association meeting, but the person who originally organized the meeting, didn't show up.

The neighborhood met for the first time following the deadly-double shooting at the nearby Saleh's Market.  At that meeting it was decided that the neighborhood would continue to have meetings the third Sunday of every month at Mary Beck Elementary School.

But this Sunday the school was locked and meeting organizers didn't show up.  But a handful of people did show up to try and attend the meeting.  One of the women who came for the meeting said she's frustrated it didn't come together.  "Very upset because we were told as early as last week that this is where it would be and it would be in the cafeteria and now we're the only one's here, nobody's here to open the door for us, nothing," said Carole Everett.

Everett said despite this she will still show up in November on the third Sunday of that month to see if there's a meeting.
