Update: Trooper hit by SUV during traffic stop

Posted:

A Michigan State Police Officer is back home after being hit during a traffic stop Wednesday afternoon.

It happened on M60 one mile northeast of Reum Road in Howard Township in Cass County.

Michigan State Police at the Niles Post says Motor Carrier Sergeant Paul Leonard of the Paw Paw Post stopped a Ford Expedition towing a pontoon boat between Yankee Street and Reum Road.

Leonard was standing at the driver's side door speaking with the driver of the SUV when he noticed a Chevrolet Suburban driving off the road. He ran for safety in front of the stopped vehicle.

A short time after that, the Suburban hit the Expedition and the boat. The collision forced the parked car to spin and hit the officer.

The sergeant was taken to a South Bend hospital for treatment and was later released.

The crash is still under investigation. When the investigation is done, the information will be given to the Cass County Prosecutor's Office for review. They will determine if charges should be filed.
