Neighbors upset with recent crime near Notre Dame

Posted:

Wednesday night police cars swarmed a home just east of Notre Dame -- the scene of a deadly shooting.  Two weeks earlier police were in the same neighborhood responding to a home invasion.  And just one week ago shots were fired after a fight broke out just South of Notre Dame's Campus.

Campus officials tell us they're concerned anytime an incident happens close to campus but they have faith in local law enforcement to respond quickly and investigate thoroughly.  University Spokesman Dennis Brown said the students will be notified of last night's nearby shooting when they return to campus from Fall Break.

Thursday students said they're not that worried about the recent crimes.  "Within this area I don't feel that much uncomfortable.  There's a lot of people walking around and police cars driving around," said student Chanhyup Kark.

And after Wednesday night's shooting police said neighbors shouldn't be concerned for their own safety.  St. Joseph County Sheriff Mike Grzegorek said, "If anybody's worried about it being a home invasion or anything like that it's definitely not anything random from the information we're receiving."

But one man who grew up on Burdette Street, right near Wednesday's shooting, said he is scared.  In fact he's worried enough that he wanted us to blur out his face when we talked to him on camera.  "It's gotten worse and worse and worse and nobody's doing anything about it."

He said this neighborhood used to be extremely safe, nobody locked their doors.  But now he locks everything.  "Do I feel safe every night?  No, not necessarily.  I'll hear a noise outside and it makes me wonder if somebody's trying to break in."

He said the recent crimes, random or not, upset him.  "They need to fix this problem before it gets out of hand or a lot more people are gonna end up dead...in their own homes."
