Fire safety advice going into winter

Posted:

As the temperatures continue to drop, firefighters want you to be on the lookout for winter fire dangers. It's important to get your furnace and fireplace checked, if you haven't already.

Fire Marshal Dave Cherrone with Clay Fire Territory says fireplaces should only be cleaned by professionals to ensure safety.  You should also make sure not to overload your fireplace.  Cherrone recommends checking with fireplace dealers to find how much is too much for your fireplace.

Cherrone says candles can be another surprising source of fires.  He says to make sure your candle fits the holder.  If the candle's too small, it can easily fall over, and could ignite nearby decorations.

This is also a good time to check on your smoke detectors.  You should change your smoke detector batteries once a year, check to make sure they are working twice a month, and dust them three times a year to guarantee they are always in working order.
