Mishawaka elementary briefly on lockdown after gunshots heard nearby

Hums Elementary School in Mishawaka was briefly placed on lockdown Tuesday after gunshots were heard nearby. The lockdown has since been lifted.

Superintendent Terry Barker tells FOX28 News police are checking the area for the source of the gunshots.

Barker says gunshots have been heard near the school before. Barker says there is a hunter who lives in the county nearby who does target shooting.

Barker says the school will be sending home a note to parents about what happened.
