Benton Harbor warns of pouring grease and oil down drains

The City of Benton Harbor is appealing to all citizens to refrain from disposing of cooking oils, especially shortening, by pouring the oil into the drains. This practice is causing and has caused an abundance of sewer backups recently in areas throughout the city. As the weather begins to transition during the fall and winter months, it is more important to ensure that this practice is eliminated as it becomes more challenging to fix the problem. The City is requesting that all oil(s) be disposed of using the trash collection provider, Reliable Disposal. Additionally, we would appeal to the residents to refrain from placing objects (ex. towels, toys, etc.) in the sewer collection system that may get lodged and create a blockage.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact the Benton Harbor City Hall (269) 927-8400 or Utility Services Department at (269) 927-8471.
