Pediatricians support condom use by teens

Doctors across the country are going to be working harder to increase access teens have to condoms.  The American Academy of Pediatrics has updated their policy on condom use and sex education for teens.

In a new statement issued this week, the AAP urges that restrictions and barriers to condoms be removed for teens.  The statement cited recent studies that show access to condoms increased condom use without increasing sexual activity and even delayed sexual activity of youths.

The statement encourages doctors "to provide condoms within their offices and to support availability within their communities."  The AAP also says that abstinence should be encouraged for adolescents as the most effective way to prevent sexually transmitted disease and unintended pregnancy.

If you would like to read the full statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics, you can read it on the AAP's website.
