Pokagon Band celebrates new homes

The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians celebrated the addition of thirty-two new duplexes and townhomes in its Tribal Village in Dowagiac with an open house.  The homes are designed to provide affordable housing and economic development for its citizens.  Half of the homes are for Pokagon elders and the other half is for its general Pokagon population.

The Vice-Chairman for the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, Robert Moody Jr., says this is a way for their community to come together.  "This new complex, these buildings, these home structures mean new growth for our people," Moody said, "but specifically it means a place for them to come back to, to our homelands, to where we once resided a long time ago as a community."

The Band says this could serve as a model of a potential development in South Bend.  No timeline has been set for the South Bend project.

With the additional thirty-two new homes, the Tribal Village now has a total of sixty-six homes.
