Freshman Folston carries Irish to 38-34 over Navy

All season long head coach Brian Kelly has been rotating running backs in and out of the offense to find out who is the best fit for Notre Dame, Saturday he might have found his guy.

Tarean Folston led the Irish (7-2) with 140 yards rushing and the go ahead touchdown in Notre Dame's 38-34 win over Navy.

"I just go into every week and play my hardest," said Folston.

The freshman seemed to give the Irish the extra dynamic they have been searching for. Quarterback Tommy Rees, who finished the game with 242 yards passing, 2 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions, appreciated the hard work from the young running back.

"He definitely didn't play like a freshman," said Rees. "He played like a guy who really knew what was going on out there."

Another Freshman also made a key play for Notre Dame. Linebacker Jaylon Smith stopped the Midshipmen when they tried to convert on fourth down late in the fourth quarter. The tackle brought the Irish offense back on the field to wind out the clock.

"When I was making the play, I was looking over to the side to make sure he was short," said Smith.

Outside of the key stop, the Irish defense struggled with the Navy option offense. The Midshipmen racked up 331 yards on the ground. However, the players were ecstatic that they made the one play that mattered most.

"Our coaches teach us to stick together," said senior linebacker Dan Fox. "Guys came out and made a great play."

Notre Dame will look to improve to 8-2 when they head to Pittsburgh next Saturday.
