Elkhart County Coroner John White says 17-year-old Tiana Alter was murdered.  White says she died from "multiple sharp force entries" late Saturday night.

The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department responded to a 911 call in the 29000 block of County Road 1 in Elkhart County late Saturday night.

When officers got there, they found 17-year-old Tiana Alter of Elkhart dead in a bedroom.  Police, the Coroners Office, and the Prosecutor's Office began an investigation and found the death suspicious.

Neighbor's remember Alter as a girl who always had a smile on her face.

"[She would] do anything for anybody," said Alter's next door neighbor. "Cheerful. Would help anybody out who needed it. So young. In high school you don't know anything yet."

Her neighbor went onto add that Alter did not live in the home she was murdered in for much longer than a month.

According to Elkhart Community Schools, Alter was a student in the district at one point, but was not enrolled in school this year.

The Sheriff's Department says they are making progress in the case, and are expecting to forward the investigation to the prosecutor's office soon.

While on scene, police also arrested a person of interest on unrelated charges.
