St. Joseph County business destroyed by fire

Posted:

A massive fire destroyed a St. Joe County business Monday night.

Crews were called to a commercial fire in the 59 thousand block of Market Street around 9:30 Monday night, that's near Ireland Road and State Road 23.

The company, Abtrex industries, makes rubber lined tanks and polypropylene tanks.

The company also manufactures its own line of rubber.

Strong fumes filled the area, but no word on exactly what chemicals may have been inside.

Dozens of firefighters were on scene from several units and got the fire under control within an hour and a half.

A neighbor describes what he heard just before spotting the fire.

"Me and my wife were just having a conversation in the house when we heard a loud explosion. Thinking that it may have been fireworks and kinda disregarded it, but even as the magnitude that it was we still kinda felt concerned. And after that report, we saw a big flash and at that point is when we decided to investigate it," says Anthony Evans, who lives nearby.

Evans went to the building before fire crews arrived and didn't see anyone near or inside the building.

There are no word of any injuries.

Volunteers were on scene providing water, snacks, and shelter for the firefighters.
