Elkhart Co. firefighters investigating early morning home fire

Elkhart County fire crews are investigating a house fire on Mishawaka Road near Oakland Avenue.

Dispatchers say they got the call just after 4:30 a.m. Concord Township firefighters are able to get the fire put out fairly quickly.

Chief Scott Maurer tells FOX28 that even though the home was vacant, they cut the power to the home just to be on the safe side.

"It didn't have utilities," he said. "It did have electric going into the meter. We went ahead and pulled that as a precaution, but it didn't have a gas meter at the residence."

Elkhart County Sheriff's deputies remained on the scene after the fire was put out to try and figure out the cause. They have not ruled out vandalism or the idea that the fire was started by squatters.
