Students raise food for the Food Bank of Northern Indiana

Students from area high schools brought food donations to The Food Bank of Northern Indiana on Wednesday.  It was Rally Day for Student Hunger Drive of Northern.  The food will be weighed at the end of the day, with prizes going to the schools who brought in the most food.

New Prairie Senior, Lexis Williams said this was a fun way to get her school involved in the community.  "We thought it was an amazing idea," Williams said, "for one, to get our school involved in something that is awesome, and for two, the holidays are coming up and there are a lot of people out there with out food, so our little contribute, it makes a huge difference."

This is the second year for this in Northern Indiana.  The students and community raised 73,288 pounds of food in six short weeks last year to support the Food Bank of Northern Indiana and local food pantries.

Students got a chance to celebrate their hard work tonight at the rally-- where all the food was totaled up.

This year, students raised 62,732 pounds of food. The school that brought in the most in the big school division was Mishawaka Marian-- while The Crossing brought in the most for the small school division. New Prairie came in second place, while Penn High School received the mission prize.
