Council approves tax abatement for Mishawaka housing complex

Posted:

On Tuesday night, Mishawaka's city council approved a five-year tax abatement for a housing complex near the St. Joseph river.

The General Manager for the project with Barak Group says it includes 80 units that are both apartments and condos.

The $15 million complex will sit just west of the 7-Eleven on the corner of Main and Mishawaka.

The Barak Group says the housing complex will be all-inclusive with things like a gym, grocery store, coffee shop and dry cleaner.

The developer says pricing may be similar to the Toscana Park project, near Heritage Square.

Council President, Mike Compton says the council usually doesn't approve abatements for housing projects, but is willing to do so this time around because the developer is willing to make such a large investment.

The developer says the project will take 18 months to complete and work could begin in the spring.

The council also read a petition to allow for construction of a "Members only retail warehouse project" on University Drive. That's the new Costco FOX28 first told you about last month.

Compton expects that petition will have no problem passing when it comes up for a vote.
