Coloma city's election tie broken by draw from a hat

Imagine running for office, only to have the decision come down to the luck of the draw. That's what happened in a Coloma City Commissioner's race.

When the votes were counted after Tuesday's election, the tally stood at 85 votes for Nate Clements and 85 votes from Bill Smith.

The candidates met at the Berrien County County Clerk's office on Thursday to decide the election with a draw from a hat.

Inside the hat were two slips of paper, one said "elected," the other "not elected."

Bill Smith drew first, selecting "elected."

"I'm a little bummed but he deserves it," said Clements. "He's a good candidate for it and you couldn't ask for a better person to have it."

"Both of us were very happy to get involved, and if you don't care, you don't get involved," said Smith.

Smith will serve a 4-year-term as a City Commissioner.

In case you were wondering, picking the winner of a tie from a hat is actually written into Berrien County's by-laws.
