Vigil held for murdered Elkhart teen

Friends and family gathered Thursday night to remember Tiana Alter.  She's the Elkhart teen stabbed to death last weekend.  26-year-old Michael Shoun is facing murder charges in her death.  But that wasn't the focus of tonight's vigil.  Tiana's cousin told everyone he wants them to remember Tiana for the good things, not for what happened to her.

Those who loved Tiana Alter said goodbye to her to the sound of Amazing Grace, with candles waving in the air.  But before the goodbyes came the memories.  Through tears, her mother, Maria Stacker, remembered her baby saying, "I'm glad everybody got to know Tiana and how beautiful she is... and I'm glad I got to share her with you."

Tiana's family said she was full of life and it was contagious.  Stacker said, "Tiana was never unhappy ever."

And Tiana's brother Isaiah Alter said, "I just loved her, everybody loved her."

Tiana's cousin, Christopher Alter, remembered her energy saying, "She was always such a happy person and always lively and if she was somewhere everybody knew it."

Aunts and Uncles said Tiana was never sitting still.  "In 17 years she crammed a lot into every single day," said her aunt, Katherine Moore.  Tiana's uncle, Alvarnaz Moore said, "I think she's outlived probably a lot of people that's lived three times her age already."

Family continued to share memories of Tiana saying she was always laughing and she loved kids.  "She loved children, she loved being with babies, she always had somebody's baby on her hip," said Katherine Moore.

And even though they're saying goodbye, They'll always have Tiana in their hearts.

The family also told everyone that they want this to raise awareness about local violence.  Alvarnaz Moore said we need to be a community, not individuals.

Also, the family is in need of donations to help pay for Tiana's funeral.  Her death obviously came very unexpected so they're not prepared to cover the cost of her funeral right now.  If you'd like to help you can give donations to Walley Mills Funeral Home in Elkhart.

There will be a viewing this Saturday at Walley Mills Funeral Home from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Following the viewing there will be a memorial at The Ol Rugged Fellowship Church in Elkhart.
