South Bend simplifies tax abatement form

South Bend announced on Friday, they have reduced the red tape by streamlining the tax abatement form.  The city's past form was seventeen pages long, which the city has been able to cut down to just four.  City officials say this will be more efficient, saving time not only to the applicants, but to city employees who manage the applications.

Managing Partner for Great Lakes Capital, Ryan Rans said the previous forms were difficult, with some questions being unclear what information they were asking for.  "The same data is now collected in three pages," Rans said, "and is basically self scored so there is transparency the whole process."

The process is now in line with similar forms available through the state, but are more efficient than similar surrounding municipalities.

The new form does not change the law or policy on tax abatements, it makes the process easier to navigate for potential investors.  South Bend administers tax abatements for projects involving new construction, expansion, or renovation, to expand the City's tax base, create and retain good paying jobs, and diversify the local economy.
