Is it too early for Christmas?

Posted:

Where did November go?  It's feeling like Christmas already.  We've sensed frustrations recently over the holiday season starting so early.  We even feel it a little bit here at FOX28.  So how early is too early?  We asked people that question to find out.

Santa arrived at the University Park Mall Friday night to the cheers of kids and their parents.  Yes, that's right the calendar says it's only early November but Santa is already here.  And it's not just Santa, the Christmas decorations and music are here too.

Is this the earliest Christmas has started?  No, Santa arrived at the mall about the same time last year.  Krystal McCulley was there visiting Santa Friday night and she said, "It's too early every year."

McCulley said even though this is nothing new, it's a little irritating.  "Can we get through one holiday at a time please?!  I'd like to get through Thanksgiving."

But others say they welcome Christmas now.  Lisa Dudeck said, "just right, we're ready!"  And Janet Bankston said, "my youngest one enjoys the lights so it's awesome cause she gets excited and it cheers me up."

Santa's arrival actually isn't the first sign of Christmas this year.  The holiday shopping deals started right after Halloween, some even before then.  That's something a lot of people said they like.  "I think it's a good thing cause I'm a single parent of three so those extra early bird special type things work awesome for me," said Bankston.  And Dudeck said, "you take a little bit at a time to shop.  When you work and you have a busy schedule you need more time."

Giving people more time, is why stores have said they started their deals earlier this year.  Because of Thanksgiving being later, there are six less shopping days between Turkey Day and Christmas.

And even McCulley who said it's too early for the holiday music and decorations said it's not too early for the shopping.  "It's the good part cause you can get things while they're on sale so you can kinda get some things out of the way."

A lot of people enjoy the early shopping.  According to a National Retail Federation Survey just over 60 percent of people start their holiday shopping in September and October.

And if you're looking for Santa in other areas he'll be arriving at the Concord Mall in Elkhart November 23rd and The Orchards Mall in Benton Harbor November 29th.
