Penn grads help Hoosiers win Big Ten Rugby Championship

Trailing Michigan 25-17 at halftime, the Indiana Hoosiers rugby team knew they needed to step it up in the second half. However, they probably didn't think a sophomore would be the difference maker for them.

Former Penn Kingsmen Ty Graham scored three times for the IU rugby team Saturday afternoon to lead the Hoosiers to 58-38 win over the Wolverines. The Indiana sophomore took home the game MVP trophy for his performance.

"So much hard work and effort went into making this team what it is," said Graham. "We're just trying to be the best we can be and today we proved it. Being number one in the Big Ten is a great feeling."

Graham, who grew up playing rugby at the Elkhart Moose Lodge, was very emotional after the win. Many of his friends and family were there to watch him and his teammates raise the trophy.

"This is the most special moment of my life being here with my family and friends" said Graham, while tearing up.

To say the Hoosiers come from behind effort was gritty would be an understatement. Many of IU's players suffered injuries throughout the game, including Isac Hall who played most of the second half with a possible broken wrist.

Another former Kingsmen, Jacob Garwood, also contributed to the Indiana win. After the win, Garwood essentially echoed Graham's sentiment about winning the championship so close to home.

"This is definitely something else," said Garwood. "I can't even put into words how happy I am."

The former Kingsmen players walked off their home field as kings of the Big Ten Saturday, and for them, it could not have been any sweeter.
