Elkhart veterans tell stories of war... Memories they will never forget

Posted:

Veterans Day is a day for honoring our nations bravest heroes. Many of those heroes have memories from war they will never forget. For some veterans like Carl Nabicht, Veterans Day is bittersweet.

Nabicht served in the infantry during the Korean war. He says, "It gives me a chance to thank god that I was as fortunate as I was to go over there and come back in one piece and in good health."

At Brentwood Independent Living in Elkhart, veterans swapped stories with one another.

Norman Christophersen recalled a chilling World War II memory, "There were 150 sailors on board who were wounded that were headed back to the United States for rehabilitation. And they never got there. You know, I could say I was never in the middle of it, but I saw what happened, I saw what happened."

Some of the memories shared are even more gut wrenching than the last. Roy Kipp was a medic on the beach of Normandy. He recounted his experience the day after troops invaded. "Did you even have anybody die in your arms? It's no good. Did you ever see a motorized vehicle with 50 to 60 dead people on it? That's what war is about."

These heroes said they are reminded of a time when they were young, when they had to grow up fast... some of them even wanting to grow up fast.

Paul Polachek served in  WWII and Korean War. He said he enlisted early than most.  "When I was in the Navy I had joined when I was 16. I lied, they took me in because I told them I was 17, and I was going into the Navy. And I was going oversees when it was my birthday, when I turned 17."

All these men say even though they each served a different branch of the military, they all share one common bond: they are still proud to be an American.
