Police: Slow down when driving in winter weather

It always seems that we forget to drive over the summer, so there are a few things to remember when you get behind the wheel in these winter weather conditions.

First of all, SLOW DOWN!

The roads are wet, and that sets up black ice that you need to be aware of. Lieutenant Tim Williams with the Mishawaka Police Department says, speed limits are set for ideal conditions, and obviously snow and ice isn't ideal.

Also, make sure to give yourself plenty of space between you and the car in front of you, because it will take you longer to stop.

"We don't want to see anybody get hurt, especially this time of the year with the holidays coming up. So we want you to drive with caution," says Williams.

Remember even if you have four-wheel drive, vehicles still need to slow down, because that won't protect you from ice.

Also, pack a winter survival kit in your vehicle in case of an emergency with things like blankets and snacks.
