Michigan school reverses ban on shirts honoring girl

Posted: Updated:

A Michigan school has reversed its decision that barred students from wearing T-shirts honoring a 12-year-old classmate with cancer who died over the weekend.

The Battle Creek Enquirer reports at least a dozen students Monday wore blue or orange to Lakeview Middle School for sixth-grader Caitlyn Jackson, who died Saturday. Blue was her favorite color and orange is worn to honor those with leukemia.

Melinda Jackson says the ban at the school in Battle Creek after her daughter's death "hurt me to the point that I didn't think I could be hurt anymore."

Lakeview School District administrators made the decision Sunday that they wouldn't allow T-shirts, but parents weren't notified. The school's finance director Amy Jones says the decision initially was made based on the district's crisis management plan.
