UPDATE: Owner looking for new location after business fire

Posted:

The owner of Crate 33 is already looking for a new location after an early morning fire destroyed his business on Wednesday.

The fire broke out around 3:55am at a building split into two different sections. One part of the building is vacant while another is home to the t-shirt business.

It took firefighters about two-and-a-half hours to put out the fire and clear the scene. Chief Stephen Cox told FOX28 it took crews longer than expected because a roof collapse made it hard for them to enter the building and put out hot spots. The good news is they say no one was injured.

"The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire, so that hasn't been an issue," Cox said.

Crews were worried about water used to fight the fire freezing in the street, and that contributed to their decision to shut it down. They called in the street department to lay down salt and sand to make it safe for crews to work. The fire department also rotated crews in and out of heated trucks to protect them from the cold.

"All of our folks were well prepared for this ahead of time," Cox said of the weather conditions. "They made sure they had cold weather gear on the rigs and everything before they got out here."

The building is a total loss.  The owner of Crate 33, Steven Estes, is hoping to reopen elsewhere as soon as possible.
