Elkhart YMCA changes its name after it's charter is revoked

Posted:

The Elkhart YMCA was told last Friday it has 10 days to remove their sign, and they are no longer a YMCA charter. Not because of funding, and not because of breaking the rules.

For over a year, the Elkhart franchise has been secretly battling with the National YMCA.  Now, we're told the national organization has told the local one to drop those famous four letters.

Elkhart YMCA Executive Director Darrell Peterson says Christian-based organizations like Lifeline, The Crossings, and CAPS have worked through The Y, bringing what he believes are positive changes, since he started 15 months ago.

Before taking on the position as the executive director, Peterson was also in charge of LIfeline Youth Ministries.  He still is; and that's the problem.

YMCA National Spokesman Brad McDermott says their policy is that an Executive Director of a chapter cannot be in charge of another organizations.  The YMCA said Peterson could choose to either drop one of his jobs or drop the name.

"The bottom line is the direction that we wanted to head, the direction that had been very successful over the last year, they didn't agree with, so it was a parting of the ways," argues Peterson.

The YMCA called the Elkhart location last Friday and said it has 10 days to take this sign down.  The center has already taken a new name to operate under.  They will now be called the Elkhart Youth and Community Center.

Peterson says current members will not have to worry about getting a new membership, and they will honor other YMCA memberships at the Elkhart location.  He says one of the first big changes the community center will see is plans for renovations to the building.

Friday, November 15, the newly named Elkhart Youth and Community Center will have it's Festival of Trees gala and auction. The event starts at 6:30pm and will be at the 200 East Jackson Boulevard location.
