Neighborhood on alert after recent gunfire

Has your cable ever gone out? The answer to that is probably yes!

But because of stray bullets?

That's what happened in one South Bend neighborhood this week.

"It was in the morning, I was in my kitchen, I heard four or five gunshots go off," said Keller Park Resident William Betzold. "I lost my TV, my internet, and everything."

Betzold didn't connect the dots at first between gunshots and losing his cable.  But he did after he overheard what the cable company workers were saying when they came to fix it.  "One guy yelled to the other guy on the bucket on the other truck...we got a possible bullet hole in our cable," said Betzold.

And possible quickly turned to highly probably when they found the evidence.  "We found two different casings on the ground. One was a 9mm and one was a 380. This is two different guns," said Betzold.

Betzold said this isn't the first time he's heard gunshots in the Keller Park Neighborhood.  But this time it was particularly frightening.  "It gets kinda scary when they start shooting up the alley...this was in broad daylight so that tells me they don't care anymore."

He's not the only neighbor on edge.  Daniel Santana says he's been hearing a lot of gunshots recently too.  "The past week I've heard it two different days, " said Keller Park resident Daniel Santana.  Which doesn't exactly make him feel safe.  Santana said, "It's not good ya know considering I have kids...nothing that I want to raise my daughter around for sure."

Keller Park Neighborhood Association Vice President Bootsie Grant said the kids are exactly why she's so worried.  "We have kids that run up and down the street around here and there's been just too much," said Grant, "a stray bullet can hit anybody."

Grant says they've been trying to make the neighborhood better and they have regular meetings and clean up days.  But her biggest wish is to get the guns out of the area.  "Every night or every other night you hear gunfire."

And now that a bullet has struck a cable line Grant worries it's just a matter of time before one strikes a person, if nothing is done.  "It's that close to where there's kids living, there's a problem and it needs to be fixed."

The Keller Park Neighborhood Association has posted a plea on their Facebook page.  They want anyone who hears gunfire or finds shell-casings, to call police.
