UPDATE: Referee recovering after collapsing during Carmel-Penn game

It was an emotional night at the Carmel-Penn game Friday.

A referee collapsed during the second quarter.

We do have some good news to share; we're told he is doing better.

A number of coaches told FOX28 he lost vital signs, but he was able to be resuscitated.

He gave the crowd a wave before being taken off the field.

We're told he was scheduled to have surgery Saturday, but should be ok.

One of the responders says it was a scary moment, but the only thing on her mind was doing the CPR that she was trained to do.

"I was so happy to see him start breathing again. He was a stubborn old guy, he wanted to get up! But yeah, relief," says athletic trainer Tricia Irvin.

Irvin says it's so important for anyone to be CPR certified, because you just never know when you might be able to save a life.

During the same game, the father of a Carmel running back passed away after having a medical incident in the stands.

Assistant coach Jeremy Stacy says a third person had an apparent seizure in the stands and was stabilized by first responders.
