House damaged in Elkhart fire

An Elkhart man is looking for a new home after an early morning fire.

The fire department says it happened in the 1600 block of Elizabeth Street, Saturday.

Firefighters arrived to smoke and flames coming from the second floor.

Luckily firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to the first floor.

A neighbor says he called 911 after seeing the fire while getting his morning paper.

"Flames going up the side of the house from the second story up to the roof on the corner.  As the Fire Department got here, the neighbors came out and it just consumed more and more of the house," says neighbor Dwight Fish.

The neighbor says just one man lived in the home and he left for work just before the fire started.

The Red Cross is providing shelter, clothing and food to that man.

No word on what started the fire.
