Justin Masterson & Von Gilbert honored as Bethel beats IUSB

Posted:

Saturday was a special day for the Bethel Pilots, and not just because they beat rival IUSB.

At halftime against the Titans, the Pilots honored three legendary Bethel athletes.

Justin Masterson, who was an All-Star for the Cleveland Indians this past season, continued his spectacular 2013 by getting inducted into the Bethel Sports Hall of Fame. Masterson lettered two times at Bethel before starting his MLB career.

"[Bethel] set the baseline for everything I am today," said Masterson. "Not only as a ball player, but also spiritually and mentally. Kind of put me in the right spot to understand where I come from and what really matters."

Former Clay basketball star Von Gilbert was also inducted into the school's hall of fame. Gilbert helped the Pilots win two national championships during his career.

"Over in Goodman Auditorium running wind sprints and going through shooting drills and everything else, I was just a young kid having fun and wanting to play basketball," said Gilbert. "I never thought something like this would come from it. It's totally unexpected."

Former Bethel soccer star Javier Lopez was the third member of the 2013 Hall of Fame class. Lopez also won a national title with the Pilots.

The celebration of the Hall of Famers was even better for Pilots fans as they watched their team beat IUSB 111-63. Zach Miller and Mishawaka native Ryan Benner lead Bethel in scoring, as both guards dropped 25 points a piece on the Titans.
