Sycamores shock the Irish with 83-70 upset

Notre Dame may have entered this season as the top ranked college basketball team in Indiana, but Indiana State probably knocked the Irish out of the rankings Saturday.

The Sycamores came into Purcell Pavilion and beat the #21 Irish 83-70. Notre Dame who normally has a very solid assist to turnover ratio, coughed up the ball 16 times which turned into 19 points for ISU.

"Our offense is going to take care of itself, but this was defense," said Khristian Smith, Indiana State Sophomore G/F, "The result for us wasn't a surprise. We fight hard and we go into practice and prepare real well for games like this."

Indiana State players had this game marked on their calendars at the beginning of the season. They say it was a chance for them to show that the Sycamores have a chance to be the best team in the state this year.

"The thing about Indiana State is most of our guys weren't recruited by high major schools like [Notre Dame], so we like to play with a chip on our shoulder," said ISU Senior guard Jake Odum. "Anytime we can play a big time team that's in state like Notre Dame, an IU or Purdue, we're going to be ready to go and come at them with everything we got."

Notre Dame trailed by ten points going into the second half, but used a rally to actually put themselves up by one. However, after they took the lead the Irish were unable to score for the next five minutes and the Sycamores jumped back in front.

"The second half we were down 10 and came back and took the lead," said Notre Dame guard Jerian Grant. "They hit us right back with a run and [our] whole team was down a little bit. We thought they were going to go away and they didn't."

The loss is Notre Dame's first in November at home in the Mike Brey-era. The Irish were 48-0 at home in the month of November with Brey as the head coach.

"We really like protecting our home court and I never really lost an early one here," said senior guard Eric Atkins. "It hurts for me. We have another opportunity to bounce back, so we'll be ready for that one."

Notre Dame will look to respond with a win against Santa Clara Friday night. Indiana State's next game is also Friday night as they host Truman State.
