Hunter falls from tree deer stand

A Marshall County man is in the hospital after falling from a deer stand.  It happened Sunday morning in a rural area near Tippecanoe.

Indiana Conservation Officers say 54-year-old Rodney Kreft was deer hunting from an elevated tree stand when it broke and Kreft fell 24 feet to the ground.  Officers say the stand had been in the tree for several years.

Kreft was not wearing a safety harness at the time of the accident.  He was taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for serious injuries to his spine.

Officers are reminding all hunters to inspect their equipment regularly and that the use of a Fall Arrest System (FAS) while hunting from elevated positions greatly reduces the risk of serious injury from falling.
