National Weather Service confirms 3 tornadoes in Michiana


A National Weather Service Damage Survey Team has confirmed two EF-1 and one EF-2 tornadoes touched down in Michiana during Sunday's severe weather outbreak.

The first tornado, EF-1 touched down around 3:03 p.m. just southwest of US 421 and Delaware Street in Medaryville in Pulaski County. The team estimates the tornado was on the ground for around 10 minutes and covered nearly 13 miles, lifting off about 2 miles northeast of Denham.

The second tornado, also an EF-1 touched down around 3:27 p.m. just of Cassopolis High School in Cass County. The team estimates this tornado was only on the ground for about a half-mile, lifting off near a golf course just north of the school.

Both tornadoes are estimated to have winds of 110 miles per hour.

The third tornado was the most powerful. The EF-2 tornado touched down about 2.5 miles south of Silver Lake in Kosciusko County around 3:43 p.m. It was on the ground for about 5 minutes, covering around 4 miles. The team estimates the maximum width of the storm was around 150 years with maximium winds of 125 miles per hour.

The team says they found extensive wind damage across the area from straight-line winds as high as 85 miles an hour.
